چکیده

Meta-heuristics are a powerful way to approximately solve hard combinatorial optimization problems. However, for a problem, the quality of results can vary considerably from one instance to another. Understanding such a behaviour is important from a theoretical point of view, but also has practical applications such as for the generation of instances during the evaluation stage of a heuristic. In this paper we propose a new complexity measure for the Quadratic Assignment Problem in the context of meta-heuristics based on local search, e.g. simulated annealing. We show how the ruggedness coeecient previously introduced by the authors, in conjunction with the well known concept of dominance, provides important features of the search space explored during a local search algorithm, and gives a rather precise idea of the complexity of an instance for these heuristics. We comment previous experimental studies concerning tabu search methods and genetic algorithms with local search in the light of our complexity measure. New computational results with simulated annealing are presented.

Effective heuristics and meta-heuristics for the quadratic assignment problem with tuned parameters and analytical comparisons

Quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is a well-known problem in the facility location and layout. It belongs to the NP-complete class. There are many heuristic and meta-heuristic methods, which are presented for QAP in the literature. In this paper, we applied 2-opt, greedy 2-opt, 3-opt, greedy 3-opt, and VNZ as heuristic methods and tabu search (TS), simulated annealing, and pa...

Robust Quadratic Assignment Problem with Uncertain Locations

We consider a generalization of the classical quadratic assignment problem, where coordinates of locations are uncertain and only upper and lower bounds are known for each coordinate. We develop a mixed integer linear programming model as a robust counterpart of the proposed uncertain model. A key challenge is that, since the uncertain model involves nonlinear objective function of the ...

Using Greedy Randomize Adaptive Search Procedure for solve the Quadratic Assignment Problem

Greedy randomize adaptive search procedure is one of the repetitive meta-heuristic to solve combinatorial problem. In this procedure, each repetition includes two, construction and local search phase. A high quality feasible primitive answer is made in construction phase and is improved in the second phase with local search. The best answer result of iterations, declare as output. In this stu...

Dynamic Resource Allocation

Computer systems are subject to continuously increasing performance demands. However, energy consumption has become a critical issue, both for high-end large-scale parallel systems [12], as well as for portable devices [34]. In other words, more work needs to be done in less time, preferably with the same or smaller energy budget. Future performance and efficiency goals of computer systems can ...

Augmenting Metaheuristics with Rewriting Systems

We describe the use of a rewriting system to determine equivalence classes over the search-space of optimisation problems. These equivalence classes may be used to derive redundant subsequences in the search-space for incorporation into metaheuristics such as backtracking, genetic algorithms and tabu-search. We use this approach as the basis for a new tabu-search variant — ‘EquationalTS’ and ap...
